Seth Gilliam Personifies Quiet Sophistication and Pure Kindness in Real Life
Seth Gilliam of The Walking Dead, Cosby Show and The Wire

In this series, we’ll share stories from those who know them personally, shining a light on what makes them stand out, even when the cameras aren’t rolling.

Our debut feature is Seth Gilliam, an actor whose work you’ve likely admired for years, from his breakout role in “The Cosby Show” to his powerful performances in “The Walking Dead” and “The Wire.” But to know Seth Gilliam is to understand why he’s the real deal, someone whose quiet sophistication and pure kindness extend far beyond his on-screen characters.

Seth was the first successful working actor I met, and our friendship blossomed during my time as a cocktail server at 10th Street Lounge in NYC. I’d later encounter other actors—Chris Noth, Mark Teich—and learned a lot about the grind of auditions and the hustle of the industry. Mark Teich once told me, “The audition is just part of the work; getting there on time and ready is the biggest part. Then it’s over, and you forget about it…unless it’s big, then you TRY to forget about it.” Actors often pontificate about their roles, their struggles, and their networking prowess. But with Seth, it was never about that.

One of the most telling things I’ve observed about actors is how they navigate their networks. If there’s someone more acclaimed or able to promote their career, many will quickly shift their focus, either dropping you or using you as a social wingman to get closer to someone who could advance their career. Seth was never that guy. His presence is understated and his kindness unfeigned—a rare blend of authenticity in an industry often marked by performative connections.

It’s no wonder that Seth found his place in Hollywood early in his career, maintaining a presence marked by a level of class and subtlety. His approach to his craft and his interactions are most closely resembled by his character on “The Cosby Show”—gentle, unassuming, and effortlessly cool—but he’s far less shy in real life. There’s an ease about him, a sophistication that is unmistakably genuine.
